owning my own architectural practice, Douglas Sydnor Architect + Associates. I’ve practiced exclusively in Arizona for over 45 years, completed 230 commissions; and have received over 60 professional design awards and published extensively. Projects I’ve worked on have ranged from municipal, health care, higher education, transportation, commercial, religious, retail, industrial, and residential. I’ve authored four books including Arizona’s historic architecture, was a Scottsdale Republic columnist, and since 2014 write the ‘Architect’s Perspective’ column for Arizona Contractor & Community Magazine. My professional and civic involvement has been extensive, serving on over 200 boards, commissions, committees, and design charrettes. My honors have included the 2020 Arts Hero by ONMedia & SRP, 2019 DAR Historic Preservation Recognition Award, 2023 and 2018 Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Award, 2011 AIA Fellowship, 2010 Friends of Scottsdale Public Library ‘Spirit of Literacy,’ and 2007 Scottsdale History Hall of Fame. I received my Bachelor of Architecture at Arizona State University and Master of Architecture at Harvard University. His hands-on experience and meticulous attention to detail were instrumental in delivering projects of quality. Ryan began his architectural journey with internships at Richard + Bauer Architecture in 2009 and Studio Ma in 2006. Transitioning into professional practice, Ryan joined Will Bruder + Partners (now Worksbureau) as an Architect and Designer I where he worked for five years. She recently opened her own business, Sydnor Design, focusing on graphic design and branding. Before starting her own firm, she practiced architecture for eight years, with her most recent position as an Associate at Alterstudio Architecture in Austin, Texas. They were recently awarded Architizer’s A+ Awards Best Residential Firm in 2023. She previously interned for Michael Hsu Office of Architecture in 2015, Will Bruder Architects in 2014, and Marlene Imirzian & Associates Architects in 2013 and 2012. While living in Austin, Texas, she was highly involved with the AIA Austin chapter, and accepted an invitation to serve on the AIA Austin Board as the Membership and Community Building Commissioner and served for two years. Promoting women's advancement in architecture and leadership is one of her personal missions, and is currently writing a book called Pep Talk: Tips, Advice, and Encouragement for Women Entering the Field of Architecture.
